right now at 11:00, they had the climb of their life and the most difficult ever completed. now we're moments away from hearing from the two climbers who scaled a sheer wall at yosemite. here's a live look at the news conference that just started at elcap meadow. one of the climbers kevin jorgeson expected to talk about that amazing feat. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. kevin jorgeson said as he grabbed the ledge, the top of the wall he paused for a moment to make sure it was real and then the cheers erupted. that's him in the yellow jacket. his partner in green.

they planned for seven years then climbed the vertical face of al cap for 19 days with only their fingers and toes and those ropes only to keep them safe from falling to their deaths. speaking to the today show this morning, yorgson said he hopes their feat inspires others. >> we have been thinking a lot about what is it about this climb that is capturing everyone's attention. i think what the opportunity is for everyone to find their own dawn wall, if you will. we had our project that we saw through to the end. what's yours? >> on the biggest bragging day of his life his partner tommy caldwell lost his voice all together, but previously has said that for him, dawn wall was about the values of optimism perseverance, dedication and the importance of dreaming big. after a little champagne celebration at the top, the duo climbs back down, which only took two to three hours and they celebrated with friends and family and got a hot shower. they said this morning the 19

days on the rocks, not all grueling. they said there were times they relaxed and stretched and recovered. to spend it in their tents. they cooked hot meals. scott, they even sipped a little whiskey and streamed videos on netflix. >> happening right now, the live conference in the meadow at yosemite, and the man walking up here is one of the yosemite officials. we'll come back to this live press conference when the climbers themselves are ready to speak. >> and you can also find continuing coverage. we have jodi hernandez there on scene. she will have the wrap-up tonight at 5:00 and 6:00 and of course, there are a number of awesome stories on this feat on nbcbayarea.com. just in to our newsroom san jose police are suspected the nightclub where chris brown performed over the weekend. you might remember five people were shot during a small concert at fiesta nightclub. san jose police say the owner accepted a 60-day suspension of his entertainment permit and

will also get a 60-day suspension from alcohol beverage control. that means that concert scheduled for this friday is now canceled. all people who were shot are going to survive. no one has been arrested. >> and we have new details in a scary scene that played out at a bay area mall. a car plowed into the macy's in newark injured six people this morning. the store already back open. >> nannette miranda is live with the latest and how it all happened. good morning. >> good morning, kris and scott. sometimes an inner voice diverts you from going from where you're going and diverting you from what you were supposed to do. and one woman said a shopper says she's glad she listened. >> i was on the second floor. >> robin didn't want to share her last name but she was shopping at the macy's when the car came barreling through inside the store last night around 5:00. >> i just heard, they said everybody evacuate.

and i didn't know really what was going on. so ied, it could be anything. so then we exited out on the top floor. >> the free mont resident was there to make a payment to her credit card but something told her to go buy a coat. if she hadn't gone to the second floor department robin would have been in the area right around the same time when the blue car crashed through. >> i got home and i got to thinking. i thought, wow, i'm glad i was held up. up there. i said, that could have been me. >> you could have gone downstairs to go back to your car. >> yeah because i always exit that way. really i think everybody does. >> in all, six people were injured. authorities say a 63-year-old woman suffered some sort of medical issue while driving by jumped the curb and went 50 feet into the store before hitting the brakes. the most critically wort was a han on the sidewalk. the store had to close for the rest of the day. given the time of the crash, responders say it could have been far worse. >> it what 5:00. there were a lot of people in

the store. we could have been dealing with a lot more injured people. >> the store promptly opened at 10:00 with workers inspecting the damage. robin is back buying the coat today, and seeing how luckily she is. >> god had a hand on me. >> now, back here live at macy's, repairs are under way here to fix that entrance but the store is open for business. at last check, the man that was hit on the sidewalk is still in critical condition. authorities don't believe that the driver was under the influence. of course, that's all still under investigation. live in newark nannette miranda. >> got to listen to the inner voice. thank you. >> let's take you back to the news conference in yosemite. here is kevin jorgeson kevin. anyway let's listen to kevin. very good. >> so i hope that everyone that's been following along with take the dawn wall as an example of what's possible and find

their own dawn wall. so thank you. >> all right. so i have a little something that tommy typed up. to share. i'm deeply honored by the outpouring of support surrounding our climb. sorry, i'm going to get emotional. i figured that if we managed to pull this off, our community of limers would be excited, but never did i imagine that it would resonate with so many. for the past seven years i formulated my life in such a way to pursue this dream. my main goal is to live an inspired life. big wall climbing became my venue because it holds a beauty and excitement that can be elusive in today's world. it keths with us our natural world in an extremely intimate way. climbing i have grown to love

yosemite and appreciate the national park service who work to protect it. this climb would have been completely impossible without the support and encouragement of many. first, my beautiful wife becca and little boy fits. they never doubted me for a second. my dad and family whose eternal optimism is contagious and patagonia and everyone else who has helped along the way. maybe i'm going out of my bounds, but it's really overwhelming to see this. a lot of us have believed in this climb. to get so many people behind it and supporting the guys and see what we see, it's really exciting. and thank you. >> what has you so emotional right now? >> i think it's everybody. you know everybody kind of getting behind this is a beautiful thing. it's really beautiful. this whole journey has been like a glimmer like this awesome piece of human, you know? we're all human. this is what brings us together and there's something really emotional and beautiful in that. so it's cool.

>> new at 11:00, san francisco is strong but two areas still need much improvement, housing and affordability. that's what mayor ed lee stated today. he noted how san francisco made great striets in job creation education, transportation, and boosting minimum wage but for 2015 mayor lee says he'll focus on making sure no one is left behind. >> so i pledge to you that this year i'll keep working night and day to see that our rising prosperity benefits every san francisco resident to make sure that san francisco remains a city where everyone belongs. >> the mayor is directing his administration to focus all resources and efforts to tackle the city's housing and affordability crisis including more funding, helping residents fight evictions, and helping rent control tenants buy their own buildings. you can find mayor ed lee's complete plan online at

ssmayor.org/sharedprosperity. >> some south bay residents are making a stink trying to keep a nearby land fill from getting bigger. protesters marched outside san jose's city hall. they're trying to block the expansion of the island dump in milpitas. neighbors say they can smell the operation from miles away even into north san jose. they say the planning commission should block the permit until the company comes up with a way to stop the smell. commission members say people should submit their comments in writing in order to be considered. >> well, continuing coverage now on the bay area's coaching car asell nfl style. oakland raiders have hired jack del sfroin san francisco 49ers looked within the team to promote jim tomsula. the niners will introduce tomsula today. he faces the daunting task of replacing harbaugh who left for the university of michigan after

a successful four-year run with the niners. tomsula has been with san francisco for eight years. he served at the defensive line coach under three separate head coaches. ceo called tomsula the right man to lead the team. niners fans we spoke to trying to keep an open mind. >> the line coach, we never heard about him, so to be with the organization this long, he'll be fine. >> being quiet and getting the job done, that's all. >> tomsula has been a head coach before. with a football team in juralany that played with the nfl's world league, and the niners were reportedly build a new staff around him with all but one of the current coaches said to be leaving the team. >> the raiders will be introducing their new coach. if you grew up in the east bay, maybe you know him. oakland is bringing jack del rio

back home. he spent the last two years in denver as the broncos defensive coordinator. before that, he was the jacksonville jaguars head coach. he also played 12 seasons in the nfl. he replaces interim head coach tony sparano and he will be the sixth head coach for the raiders since just 2007. and the raider nation in the east bay giving del rio a warm welcome. this is a sign outside ricky's sports bar in san leandro. it says welcome home coach del rio. any raiders fan will tell you ricky's might as well be raiders nur sawnirvana nirvana. del rio's parents have season tickets. >> up next at 11:00, the nominees are -- who leads the pack when it comes to oscar nominations? >> plus new competition for go-pro. we'll show you apple's plans to make their own action camera.

row. now, speaking of things that are moving to the negative let's talk about the euro. it continues to fall. one euro will cost you $1.15. falling prices are now a major worry in europe as well as deflation, which can lead to that deadly economy. prices keep falling to the point where people stop buying things because they figure whatever they want to buy will be cheaper tomorrow. >> shares in go-pro moving cheaper today. a day after apple files for a new patent that sounds like a version of the go-pro action camera. just because apple files for a patent doesn't necessarily mean it's going to build a separate camera for iphone. in fact apple rarely builds stand-alone accessories. it has its core products and sticks to them. about the only exception to the rule is this. it was a speaker apple made for the ipod. steve jobs gathered everybody together to unveil it back in about 2002. we kept waiting for the other

shoe to drop and for him to say, and one more thing, but it never happened. it was just a speaker, and we said oh, and we went home. >> there's so many kinds we have access to now. >> five bay yare kaw citys are one step closer to winning a $5 million prize for energy efficiency. sunnyvale, berkeley san mateo, palo alto free mont competing with other cities to demonstrate the best way to lower energy costs. the money will be award today the city that most effectively reduces electric and gas consumption over a two-year period. stay tuned and we'll tell you who the winner is then. >> new details this morning on a measles outbreak that started at disneyland and kept growing. a medical clinic in the san diego yare qua had to be shut down when five people of the measles symptoms arrived. people got there with rashes. they were immediately isolated

and health officials are trying to figure out if the cases are related to a number of people who got sick after going to disney disneyland and california adventure. in addition to the five cases in la mesa. six other confirmed cases were disclosed yesterday. one in san diego county and five more in los angeles county. that brings the total measles cases related to the outbreak to 32 including 28 here in california. >> well the race for oscar is on. the academy award nominations announced this morning in los angeles. >> mark barger highlights the nominee nominees. >> now you're about to destroy what's left of your career. >> the dark comedy "birdman" shared the spotlight with "grand pude budapest" hotel. each grabbed nine overall including one for best picture. >> american sniper also has a shot at best picture after being shut out at the golden globes. selma is another drama based on

real-life events. and the imitation game and the theory of everything. >> ride to have fun? >> the best picture field also includes boyhood, as well as the musical drama whiplash. >> the theory of everything's eddyie redmayne shared actor honors with birdman's michael keaton. they'll go head to head for best actor. their competition includes bradley cooper for american sniper steve carell for foxcatcher and benedict cumberbatch for the imitation game. >> julianne moore could add an oscar for still alice. felicity jones, and rauz minute pike for gone girl and reese witherspoon for wild. the awards will be handed out february 22nd. >> well this will be no weekend to stay cooped up in a movie theater, although the sniper movie is out. i think i would like to see

that. >> not this weekend. it's supposed to be beautiful. >> maybe for an hour and a half. where's my hour and a half window? >> bradley cooper, you know what i mean? i'll give him an hour of my time. to see the movie. heldsburg seeing fog. today is a great day to see the movie at this point. we're starting to see the fog clear and getting a little bit of sunshine, but i have to tell you, it is a spare the air day. i don't think we're going to be looking at the conditions for tomorrow, though with showers on the way. 66 degrees in the south bay. 74 64 for the peninsula and 65 in the east shore. you can't get out of the fog but you will as you head from 12:00 to 1:00. san francisco, low lingering clouds there, and 64 degrees in the north bay. we just got an update that i'm really really happy to bring to the table. this is july 2014. i'm talking about the drought. you see here just about the entire bay area at that point in the exceptional drought category. now, because of the recent rainfall that we've had, over

december even with 20 days without rain this is where we now stand. we're actually looking pretty good. we're back to d-2 from marin county south all the way to northern san mateo county and basely, we could be a lot worse off if we did not get that rain. now, what we have coming our way as we head throughout tomorrow not much enough to clear out the air quality, but it looks like the pattern is starting to shift. storm track is going back to the northering going to stay just to the north of us. we have about a 10% chance for rain as we head throughout each and every day. sunday through next friday. but here is the deal. if we see any rain out of the next system mostly going to be up in sonoma county maybe some drizzle in the south bay, but not looking good for that. looking better as we head throughout next week towards the end of the week specifically. but we got this big blocking ridge of high pressure. you can see as we head throughout the week and the storm track is going to be just to our north. just to the north of sonoma county. nonetheless, temperatures will

approach the 70s. we're talking about level that are way above average. 15 to 20 degrees. and temperatures look like this. 69 degrees on saturday in san jose. 64 in the city by the bay. as we get into sunday into monday, like i said 10% chances for rain. holding on to those really warm temperatures. we just had this bizarre pattern with high pressure above us and the storm track dipping to the south. the good news is temperatures at the beaches this weekend, lots of sunshine coming your way, in the 70s. we'll tell you the spots you might want to check out, as you know, off peak season. that means deals for you and me as we head to our beach resorts. and i can take a deal. i know kris sanchez can, as well. what about you, scott? >> sure, absolutely. >> good man. still to come a southern california fights to get back its beloved pet. this guy, not the cute little kitten sitting next to it. >> run, kitten. run. >> they say they deserve to keep the reptile. we'll tell you why.

baseball cards from a huge collection called the portland trove are now on sale in maine. last night's auction included the hall of famers ticobb and cy young. they went for about $3,000 each.

the 1400 card collection comes from a family who wanted to remain anonymous. they're auctions around 200 cards off. >> an 8-foot calalligator was captured from a backyard of a home, but the homeowners weren't relieved. they were outraged. they say this gator is a beloved member of their family. they bought him 37 years ago at a pet store in los angeles and he's been living with the family ever since. his owner tells us jackson wouldn't hurt a fly, but it turns out not everybody believes that. a neighbor reportedly tipped off animus services and that led to a search warrant and ultimately jackson taken by animal control. officers say keeping wild' life without a permit is illegal in l.a. >> you know that's not going to end well. we will report when it doesn't. >> facebook wants you to spend more time on facebook. a new feature called facebook at work is made for workers to communicate with each other instead of using e-mail. it will keep the look and feel of news feed and messaging but

kept separate from personal accounts and compete with other offerings. >> here's a financial forecast that's bound to frustrate a lot of people. filing your income taxes this year could be messy and expensive because of massive budget cuts at the irs. good luck getting help on the phone. the irs admits just half of the callers to the agency will actually reach a person. if you do get through, expect to be on hold at least 30 minutes. that means taxpayers who can't get help could make costly lyly mistakes or could give up and not file at all, which is not a good option. compounding the problem, this is the first year of the affordable care act, which will complicate things for millions of families. >> they want to reduce the irs' budget, but then they complain about the bad service that the irs offers. and so the budget for the irs now is back to its level in

france continues to be on edge after last week's attack on "charlie hebdo." >> they stressed french muslims have the sail rights as all french citizens. we have today's developments. >> today, the surviving staff gathered again for the funerals of three of their colleagues. two cartoonists. new images emerged of the super market killer in a bullet proof vest. his hostages have a stroller abandoned. he ordered one hostage to destroy the cctv cameras.

four jews died here. the massacre at the magazine has been claimed by al qaeda. 5 million copies are being printed. the first run sold out in hours. many buying it to support free speech. the staff nicknaming it the survivors edition. this famous muslim comedian is on the front pages today, charges by police with defending terrorism after he identified himself with one of the killers. more than 50 other muslims have been arrested on similar charges. muslims have also been the victims of a backlash. more than 50 attacks against them. many muslims say the latest charlie front cover depicting the prophet mohammed is provocative. france's president is trying to calm fears. he'll meet john kerry to discuss the massacre and what can be done to prevent any more. as well as secretary kerry's talks here in paris where the police sirens continue to wail

president obama will meet at the white house with the british prime minister david cameron. they have penned a joint newspaper article saying we will not be cut by the terrorists. we will defeat these barbaric killers. back to you. >> authorities say an american was planning an attack on u.s. soil similar to the deadly attack on canada's parliament building last fall. undercover officers call 20-year-old christopher cornell buying two assault type rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition. he was planning to set off people bombs in the capitol and shoot people as they fled. he tweeted about isis propaganda videos. >> he never showed any signs of any kind of violence or anything. i mean quiet, shy. good kid. >> the fbi has been looking at christopher cornell cyst lance year. he saved money but had not made the bombs yet. >> president obama is renewing the push for paid sick leave for

millions of working parents. today, the president will call on congress to pass a measure requiring companies to offer up to seven days of paid sick leave every year. he will also ask congress for more than $2 billion to help create paid family and medical leave programs. nikz, he will propose legislation provided federal workers with up to six weeks of paid leave after the birth of a child. right now, only three states including california offer paid family and medical leave. >> they're not closing the school, but they are moving it and it's not sitting well. happening to san jose charter school known for helping at-risk student. downtown college prep has generated a lot of community praise and college-bound students. the campus is in alameda. the proposed site will be near san jose high school. as robert honda shows us it's a much smaller facility. >> there are more than 400

students at downtown college prep and it boasts many success stories. their first charter school opened in 2006 and people here are upset the unifyied school district wants to move the campus to the 24th street site which they say is one fourth the size and will eliminate numerous facilities including its science labs as well as the sprawling media or commons area. >> there is no such facility that exists in the area that the district has prescribed for us. so we're losing a really critical hub. >> many families say dcp's focus on getting at-risk youngsterinize to college would be hard to do in a smaller campus. >> i feel like i have nothing, and it will make me not want to go to school. >> but you would still go to school? >> possibly yes. >> my fear is that my students are going to be like fall apart. we're going to have a lot of problems. >> the district says the possible move is part of a

series of changes based on expiring leases and limited bond money. >> the talks behind the contract the lease, hasn't been finalized at this point, so it all depends on the needs so we can provide those classrooms for them. >> robert honda, nbc bay area news. speaking of san jose there's a shift after seeing a business boom in downtown. some shop owners and restaurant owners are now on the move leaving the city hub, saying it's just too dangerous. we listened to the problems and found not everyone agrees with the dismal depiction. >> at discover san jose in downtown kimberly brady's shop sells the city itself from local honey to tech computer jewelry and historical books. >> i have seen downtown come a long way or i wouldn't have invested it in a year and a half ago and opened the store. >> as a board member she was disappointed to learn two nearby businesses recently closed leaving downtown with two more

vacancies. >> and then black bird closed. every time somebody closes it affects us a little more each way as well. so i'm a little concerned. >> those two establishments azucar's restaurant and lounge and a sports bar closed recently. a statement on the facebook page said it will quote, reopen in a safer, cleaner, upscale location. too much vileolence in downtown san jose. we couldn't reach them for comment, but their neighbor next door disagrees. >> it's not too dangerous. the problem is that everybody perceives it like that because word of mouth or some things that happen. >> chaucho's hires a security guard as a precaution. the manager said a bigger problem is vacant buildings turning people away from exploring the city. workers in downtown share. >> they're all sort of spread out. you can't really hang out downtown like you would anywhere else. >> another business planning to move a billiards store.

but the manager tells me they hope to move closer to the downtown core to increase business. >> there's a lot to be proud of here. >> an optimistic exhale for those selling the city. >> we had 40 new restaurants open up next year. we had four leave recently. if you want to look at it that way, the glass is half full. >> nbc bay area news. >> sticking to san jose the debris has been sitting on the street for more than a year. some seniors say they have had it they want action. that's next to allen rock avenue in king road. damian trujillo shows us the problem and the clean-up. >> she walks to do her errands every other day, but only in the daytime. that's because maria martinez says it's too risky at night with the busted street light. what's up here? >> maria says she's fearful that

someone is hiding in the bushes and the seniors who live on the street can't run away from the potential danger. joaquin says they're forced to lock their doors early, before it gets dark. then there is the trash. the seniors say the gardening debris has been sitting on the curb for months with no one bothering to pick it up. >> my main concern is the graffiti and trash along the whole avenue. >> jamie says all of the avenue needs revitalization. she says too many massage parlors, too much trash, tagging. >> that's where i shop and i try to make friends with the owners and ask them can i buy the paint? how do we clean this up? and their response is that the owners have to okay it. >> she wants to help form a business association to restore allen rock avenue. back on kentucky place, the chief of staff new kournl woman showed up today to asays the

problem. she said this is unacceptable and should never happen in any part of san jose. carrasco vowed to have the problem fixed within 48 hours. damian trujillo. >> although the philippines is 80% catholic there are great concerns about pope francis' safety there. speaking of reporters on the plane, the pope admitted he has fears for the vatican and for his safety. anne thompson reports from manila on the pope's arrival there. >> the motorcade from the airport to the vatican embassy in manila is the first big test of a massive security effort in the philippines to protect the pope. francis comes here after an unexpected enthusiastically welcome in sri lanka. 5 million are expected for sunday's service to see a man who cares more about the crowds than he does his own security. >> how do you protect a man who doesn't seem to want to be protected? >> well, it's really a

welcome back. going for a brisk 20-minute walk every day could cut your risk of premature death up to 30% according to a new study from the university of cambridge. they researched height weight and exercise statistics for more than 300,000 adults over the past 12 years. they found the greatest risk of premature death were among those who were inactive no matter how much they weighed. but burning just 90 to 110 more calories the equivalent of a brisk 20-minute walk each day, can reduce the risk by 16% to

this is usually where we talk about panda bears. today, we're going to talk about black bears because they were playing on the ice after a storm in a national park in china, and of course they were caught on camera. >> take a look at these two wrestling around playing with each other. what makes it unusual is one bear is wild. he doesn't live in the park itself. they don't know each other, but i guess they know each other now. the unknown bear there in the black ultimately runs off and the park's staff has not bib able to find him since. >> thanks for joining us. we'll see you tomorrow.
